muziek

Genesis, Gentle Giant, Rush, Flower Kings, Moongarden, Anekdoten, Beardfish, Pink Floyd, Marillion, Fish, Mindgames, Simon Says, Rick Wakeman, Anathema, Porcupine Tree, The Watch, The Musical Box, The Australian Pink Floyd Show, Metallica, King Crimson, Karma Depth, Division by Zero, Spock's Beard, Pendragon, Foo Fighters, Buffalo Tom, Pearl Jam, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tool, Arena, Tempestt, Animations, Riverside, Awake, Kamelot, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Black Sabbath, Indukti, Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Dominici, Thought Chamber, Ozomati, IQ, Managala Valis, Conception, Faith No More, Panopticum, Channel Zero, Henry Rollins

Update - Genesis - Turn it on Again Tour 2007

genesisbanner

tioa tour

We voelden ons allemaal opnieuw tiener ;-).

Hamburg was great... with my pics in ...(but?)
behindthelines - posted on June 17, 2007, 3:13:07 AM

No buts ... really, overall it was really GREAT!
here are my impressions from the show at Hamburg, (not as eloquently written as Richard's and not so long, sorry  Wink)

We walked up to the stadium from our hotel, about 30 minutes walk. Surprised to see people weren't let in by then (already 17.30) and the rain had started pouring down on the long queue at the back of the stadium). Thunder and lightning and finding some shelter underneath the trees (!!) at the entrance.

The stadium was fully filled by the time the band opened (20.15?). The atmosphere was great, although the people in the middle were still getting wet! However, I think the dark clouds allowed us to get a great light show!

Although I knew the setlist, and didn't agree with all of it (so I didn't applaud for HoMH) , I was nonetheless totally shaken off my feet with the (opening) music!! BTL, after 15 years of seeing them live, and thinking never to see them live again, it sent shivers down the spine!! Although I write some remarks below, I am TOTALLY knocked off my feet and happy with this show, it was GREAT!!

Click!
Click!

- Phil spoke some German notes in between songs, 'shitty rain' eg, and took some pics with his own digital camera, he even said 'auf wiederseen' at the end - doesn't this mean we will see them again at Hamburg?   Smiley- IMO, the Dukes-end BEGS for the Guide Vocal, please, please, it really feels smt missing here. YOU are the ONE... it begs this....

- The In the cage medley, I feel was a bit slow at the beginning (but overall SUPERB and my favourite)

- The light show was great, fireworks, smoke and all, and the screen show was great, BUT
I was in section 4A (about the middle of the stadium at the side). I could not NEARLY see the whole of the screen because of the side curve in the screen and that's a pity. I think the people more up front at the side missed out on a lot of the cool central screen pics (the most expensive seats?). Anyway, I feel sorry I have closer seats for example the Paris show, even further away than the middle of the stadium would be better to full enjoy the screen and lights show.

- I think, and this is just my impression, that Tony slipped during second Hbts, when he missed a part where he was supposed to enter the song but didn't.

- Los endos rocked!! awesome

Click!
Click!
- I feel Phil's singing wasn't too great during Ripples and Mama, but it was really great overall. He seemed to be uncomfortable singing during the closing song as well (CC) reaching several times to his back (the control of his ear props?) which once led to a shrieking pppppppppppippppp through the overall speakers with a grimas on his face (I just had my binoculars at that time).
I think the rain (cold?) also bothered him, because he closed his rainvest to his chin several times, as if to want to keep warm.

- the domino principle was great, the whole stadium was really into it and 'knew' it and it got beyond Phil's control a bit (when the people down here got to cheering on and no 'we haven't got time for that' and 'stop it Cheesy ' as Phil's reaction)

- the screen show during IkwIl and the tambourine thing was great, nice seeing all the old pics on screen!!

- Mike seemed to be a bit reserved at the beginning, but he came 'loose' and swinging during the show and smiling, and really seemed to enjoy himself!!

- of all the screen pics I saw of Tony, he seemed soooooooooo concentrated, and a bit stressed (?) at times? , really sweaty at the end, didn't see any smile from him...
Click!
- at the end, Phil also specially mentioned Daryl and Chester (huray!!), with the audience applause for them, adding ' 30 years working with the band' (Huh ). In think I missed smt here? (no, not CAS...)

Don't let these few remarks give a wrong impression of the show!! It was GREAT!!

afterwards, we did get totally wet to the bone walking back to the hotel (it just started raining again when we left!)
and PS (but who cares, when seeing G after 15 years for the first time, but nonetheless) culinary speaking, Hamburg was a desolate place for us, ok, many many hamburgers and würste (sausages - even pferde würste), but being vegetarians, we didn't find a ' quick' meal without any animals in it!)

Genesis, yeah TIOA!!
Genesis rocks!!!!

+ if you want to see some photo's of the G-merchandise at the Tour, I posted them in the merchandise thread on the general discussion
+ hubbie managed to film the whole In the cage medley with his mobile - will be posting it soon!

reporting from Brussels- great show, despite empty seats
behindthelines - posted on June 25, 2007, 2:33:50

Got back from Brussels safely at 1.30 AM, smooth ride (90 km).

We arrived at the stadium at about 16.30. Rain on and off, but not heavy showers, just a slow drizzle now and then that continued during the first hour of the show. Doors went open at 17.10. Although the show was about to start at 20.30, it was after 21 o'clock when they started!! It was drizzling on and off the first hour, but then stayed dry. It was also pretty dark from about 9.30 onwards because of all the clouds, which made the stage come out very good! Very nice.

Our previous show was in Hamburg, where we were on the side stand (middle). Now we were in the pitch (golden circle) and it was a totally different experience. We were about 10th row. The sound quality in the pitch was very very good, crystal clear, better than it was on the sides in Hamburg. On the other hand, it's a pity you can hardly see the screen when you're close in the pitch. I think the light how was great however, even though some people on here seem not to like it, I think it is great!! Also, the fireworks after IT are great, nice touch!

Being in the pitch, you are really close to the band, you can even hear Phil or Chester count the 'one - two - three - four count' intro into the songs, but you miss a lot of the light and screen show, which I think is great as well. So it both has it's upshots.

The stadium wasn't full by any means. I think certainly a couple of thousand places still available. Being in the pitch, it was hard to get an overview, but we could certainly see many empty seats in the stands... Pity!! It didn't seem to affect the atmosphere though, although up front gives a different view of course. The Domino Principle was in full effect, and although Phil just explained it in English, he got the stadium along. Great! So great audience participation, also during Throwing it all away, yes Joey, they haven't dropped it yet  Wink

I feel the band was in great shape. Phil did his usual introduction in the native language, (Goeienavond and Bonsoir) however, he stopped after just this and threw his usual paper phonetic notes away, saying 'that's it for the languages' and further mainly spoke in English and some occasional French words - which he didn't need a paper for, his French is probably quite good! (you have to know: Belgium is a trilingual country: majority Flemish, then French and also German language - so it's considered delicate in this country to put the emphasis on one of these languages...).

The show ran smoothly, although at the end of 2nd Home by the Sea we saw some water that had gathered up on the plastic roof over the band suddenly poor onto Mike's pedals (or close to his pedals), which seemed to give him some worries. Anyway, it was kind of frightening that his following intro into FYFM seemed awkward - quickly adjusted though, but probably the water must have had some effect there...

At one point (can't remember the song) Phil was taking a 'break' on stage (so probably during one of the instrumental songs) and he 'found' a drum stick next to Chester's drums on the ground. Showing it to Chester: 'so what's this then?' Chester seemed to indicate 'broken' and Phil kinda nodded his head, as I to say ayayaya...

Phil's voice was clean, high, great, all the high notes during MAMA were excellent. WOW! I even think he sang much better than during the FFFT shows I saw.

All I can say is: it was over far too quick! Two shows down, another four to go, but again I am glad that I'm going 6 times. Not one too many, it will be over so quickly!

It was very nice to bump in to Chocolate Surprise, Steve H. (no, not that one ;-) , Martijn De Koning, Harlequin squonk and her parents (all from the old forum -  the forum just before the American press conference). It made me realize again how many people haven't joined up on here  Sad. Nice to have a chat with them!! And also Denis and Loulou from the French forum!

And I'm just watching a repeat of the evening news on the Belgian tele on the background, one of the headlines: 'Phil Collins is touring again with the popgroup Genesis'. POP group Huh - aaaaaaarggggghhhhhhhhh.....

BTW: the beer cups weren't 'used' in Brussels. However, they were sold at the merchandise stalls, 10 Euro's for three together - empty ones that is (in a carton box). This makes them even more expensive then in Hamburg (2,5 Euro extra for a pint of beer!).
I took film of Ripples and drum duet - will put that up tomorrow, also some pics, too tired now...

Genesis - Dusseldorf, LTU Arena - 26 06 2007

Just got back from Dusseldorf (300km) drive.
This was the best show for me, better than Hamburg and Brussels together!!! (well... every show has it's special memory, but this one surely stands out)
I feel like driving back to see the show again tomorrrow overthere....  Cheesy

genesis dussledorf

Although we were up and far away in the stands (nearly at the far end of the side stand - tribune 144), this was AWESOME. The light and screen show came out in full effect. Really, really nice, what'm saying, superb, magnificent OMG!! Even with the closed roof, the fireworks at the end of IT came out everywhere.
This darkness + ligh+ screenshow and the nice overview we had from far away gave the show such a super feeling, also the sound is so much better, stonger, more full force in a 'closed' atmosphere.

I feel the audience was really involved, even up and far away where we were, participating, knowing the 'old' songs as well.

I don't feel Phil was in that great shape this evening, singing was good though, mama was  Cheesy , very good, although he cut back on his 'German' introductory notes in between and didn't seem to want to spend too much time with those lines this time. He did fumble in the beginning of HbtS big time.

After Mama, the audience applauded for very long, too long in Phil's mind, he jokingly looked at his watch as if to say, now that's enough, hé!?

And as for CC - why it is special to the band, Phil nicely spelled it out now 'we feel it is part of the Genesis tradition'  Roll Eyes

You tube (openingsong): Behind the Lines - Duke's Travels - Turn it on Again

Yes a great show, yet again!!
It was very nice to meet up with some forum members and later my husband and I had some drinks with members of Krissy's forum (the TIOA forum).

The atmosphere in the stadium was very good!  :DMexican wave couple of times before the show started. Very good audience reactions and participation, the Domino principle was again 'disturbed' (but in a nice way) by the middle section, who didn't follow Phil's commands and set the whole stadium clapping and cheering!
Phil talked French in between songs, here and there he added some English, but it was mainly (good) French, without a piece of paper to help him along. As stated above, it seems the good vibes in the audience really reached them, fabulous ce soir!

What I noticed for the first time was Phil's 'singing' (or more or less chanting?) during the drum duet (when they are both already behind the drum kit). I had not noticed this before and found it very nice. I don't know whether the audience is supposed to hear this or not (and whether I heard it by accident this time, or I just hadn't noticed before?), but he surely seemed to enjoy himself doing it.

So I say again, I enjoyed myself very much, loved the show, so don't let these comments make you think otherwise.  Wink

Mike had some serious guitar problems during Land of Confusion (about ? of the song), and then again it took a whole while into Home by the Sea before again his guitar was up again. Maybe somebody else can explain it better in the appropriate musicology terms ;-)
The echoing in the stadium was very bad. Sad
First time as well I noticed it so heavily in the tour. Maybe this has to do with the fact that the lower tribune at the back was a standing tribune (I guess for those in the pitch?) and not filled with people. The sound seemed to bounce back off the hard concrete steps (because no people up there) very heavily...

And there was indeed no beer in the stadium. Actually there was, but it was alcoholfree. I didn't know until afterwards ;-)

Oh, and before the show, when we came back from our walk to the Eiffeltower, we suddenly heard policy coming up (moto) and then a couple of cars speeding by (this was next to the Seine, at the Radio France building) going in the direction of the stadium. You bet I waved at them  Grin

Berlin my experience + photos + videos
behindthelines - posted on July 6, 2007, 1:23:39 AM

Just got back from Berlin late this evening. Wow, what a great city, we had a lovely time there, it was the first time we ever been there, but it sure feels like going back there! Lots to see and do, everything very well organised, easy public transport and lots of place to have a good meal (even for veggies - which is a first for us in Germany!). Although I twisted my ankle (for the zillionth time! ouch) just after walking about 5 minutes in Berlin, I still managed to walk around plenty and do lots of sightseeing ....  Smiley

On Tuesday, we arrived at about 6pm at the Olympia stadium. Plenty of time till the show started, time to look around a bit. Very nice stadium, with much historical significance as well (I think a lot of people know the images from the Olympic games of 1936)...

What I found very interesting were the masses of swallows around the stadium, with some nests attached to the upper sides of the outside stadium. Nice spectacle! Also the Olympic swimming pool just next to the stadium, with people still swimming and diving... The stadium gradually filled up, but I don't think it was totally full house, during the show I could still see some empty places, sometimes nearly full rows empty. The newspaper review we read in the Berliner newspaper on Thursday (a very positive review actually) spoke of about 60.000 people being there. I think the stadium can hold nearly 80.000?

Before the show, there was rain, AGAIN! Phil related to this, by saying yet again 'scheisse regen' (??) and then - in between his teeth in a sighing manner 'every bloody show...'. Phil's communication with the audience was very good, he spoke a lot of German in between. The rain stopped at about the beginning of the show though.
PS: UK76, I managed to spot you on front row with my binoculars and took a picture - although not that sharp - of you, will send it later  Smiley

I think this show was about the best 'sounding' show I have heard so far. Good sound in the stadium, we were about half way at the side. Very good singing from Phil. Also the switch over during the In the Cage medley sounded better, when it used to sound a bit awkward in my ears before (or maybe that's because I'm now getting used to Dukes travels being in there...). However, it seemed that Mike had guitar problem AGAIN during Home by the sea (at least, that's what it sounded and looked at - binoculars - to me, although it didn't take as long as on the Paris show for it to get fixed). During the drum duet, Phil was again chanting freely. No specific words, just some 'yeaheee yeheeees'. As I said in my review of the Paris show, I find this very nice, but I can't recall hearing it during the first shows I've been to. Is it new or did I just not notice before? The 'encore' Cd's will clarify that I guess.

Before the drum duet, I would see Phil throwing one of his sticks away on stage, apparently not a good stick for him.

The domino principle was again well done. Good audience participation, although the first section to start was a bit slow (this was the tribune we were in). Phil said something to the effect as 'they have to wake up first'. Hey, I screamed my lungs out and shook my arms in the air - as to the amazement of some people around me - when he said "those people over there". They soon got the hang of it. This lack of enthusiasm around me was a bit the downside of the show for me. Most people in my proximities seemed not to know any of the 'older' songs, or didn't seem to care less. 3 rows in front of u a couple of about 50 years just LEFT the show during Ripples (and no, they never came back...). The guy next to me was sometime yawning and looked at his watch from time to time. This was not fun.... But hey, it seems hard to live up to the experience of the Paris show, when we were amidst of many forum members (who of course or more aware of Genesis legacy, not?)

Oh yeah, and there was a mall flaw in the right oval screen. Seems a small section wasn't working properly, yes Mr Woodruff, we noticed! They should fix it soon, because sometimes it was annoying.

Click!

But overall I thought the Berlin show was great of course. Pfew. It's hard to realize that time is passing so quickly now  Wink , and Twickenham is already there in 3 days time (my last show), gosh I'm gonna cry. This is the end...  Cry

London, Live Earth - 07 07 2007 +
Genesis - Twickenham, Stadium - 08 07 2007

Not so nice UK concerts (Live Earth + Twickenham) + photos
behindthelines - posted on July 10, 2007, 5:20:53 PM

Got back yesterday from the UK, we were at Live Earth on Saturday and at the Genesis show in Twickenham on Sunday. All in all, we had a good time, but many disappointing things led my husband to conclude never to go to a concert show in England again (I tend to agree), and I must also join him in adding that we never saw so many drunken people together at a show, kinda ruining the experience for us!  Sad

I see many positive words on here about the Twickenham show, and I am truly happy for everybody who had a great time. It was just not so overwhelming for us.
It's a good thing I couldn't write my thoughts just after the shows, and having slept over it two nights, has made my review a bit more positive. The fact for just having attended the 'last' Genesis show of six for us might have added to my depressive or disappointed (??) mood, with some Genesis withdrawl symptoms popping up I guess - yes-yes - so take this as you will....   Wink

A note on Live Earth. I thought it was a sham. Some parts we were in the pitch, sometimes we sat down at the side rear tribune (left and right).
- people just didn't listen to the messages in between show appearances. One very shameful moment was when an African lady - dressed in traditional ethnic attire - was up front talking about the effects of climate change on their way of life - and soooooo many people yapping right through this.  Shocked

- ecologically friendly organised? I doubt it, litter everywhere, the rubbish bins being filled ad random with mixed goods and after a while just not being filled (or emptied) anymore...
- why were no NGO's allowed into the stadium grounds? The only stalls were Live Earth merchandise and food and drink. And some sponsors of course. Missed opportunity IMO.
- the food and drink were terribly expensive and plain junk food (fish and chips 8,5 pounds)
- no vegetarian food available - despite vegetarian message on the screen (that was a good one though, images of s*h*itt*ing animals, close ups of this - production of methane etc). I think we were about the only ones in our block listening to this - preaching to the converted...
- many, many drunken people. Man, I cannot see the fun in this. Beercups (still with beer in them) thrown up in the air in the pitch. Ladies (ahum, not quite an appropriate word I think) zigzagging their way through or barely being able to stand and waffling or screaming some words to the songs. Lads showing their most macho side - smt scary appearances ...
- the Genesis setlist was disappointing with IT in it... I feel Genesis was a bit miscast in comparison with the other acts of the day. They surely didn't fit in there, but then again, where do they fit in? Phil's micro didn't seem to work properly all the time and it seemed to me that there were (again) guitar problems during Land of Confusion. The stadium was still half empty, with many people just coming in later. The crowd reception seemed accordingly tepid.
- Metallica + Foofighters were good, Spinal Tap was fun with the bass guitars lined up. Peppers seemed to have some disputes on stage?
- Of course, the thing that blew us away was Pussycat dolls and Madonna ;-))

Anyway, we were a bit puzzled, dazzled, confused by the whole day, but managed to get back to the hotel very smoothly and I was in full anticipation of the next day for the Genesis show at Twickenham.

Nov, Steve & family, Trui, Anna (Cynthia's mallet), Nigel (Cosmic Lawnmower) & Steve (Dorset bay)

Got at Twickenham about 4 o'clock, went to the Barmy arms pub and was nice having some drinks and talking to other G-fans. Nice and fun! thanks all you guys and girls!

Left to the stadium at about 5.30. The stadium at Twickenham is nice, and it was indeed a full house!

We had a good view on stage (B2), far enough to be able to enjoy the whole stage and not so close that you have to tilt your head backwards to look up to the guys. However, while the rest of the stadium was gradually filling up, the rows in front of us kept empty (??). I guess these were VIP tickets, because these people arrived just before the show started (and many during the first songs) and had wine drinks with them... Most of them looked totally uninterested, snobbish and talked all the way through or left before the end of the show.
After having addressed one of the yapping guys in front of us to please keep it down and that we are here to enjoy the show (to no avail) we decided to go back a couple of rows just after Afterglow, there were plenty empty seats up there.
The atmosphere was better there, a more knowledgeable crowd, cheering fans. Thank god.

However, many same scenes as at Live Earth. The lady standing at the end of the row was half naked, barefooted and soooo drunk. She went up and down the hall (dancing?), seemingly having the time of her life, the stewards (or what's their name?) even had fun with her, coming up to have a chat with her and her friend, messin' about, laughing out loud... At some point a lady in front of me decided to stand up on her chair, blocking the view for many others. Also up there, I noticed the many people talking throughout the show, not being interested, and well, gradually getting pissed drink after drink...Pfew.

About the show itself:
- the sound quality in the stadium was pretty good I feel
- very good show I think, although my husband and I both had the idea that Phil's voice seemed slightly less good than on previous shows we've seen. His voice just didn't get through on some of the higher notes this time. (eg at the end of FYFM - he had obvious problems there).
- I expected the band (well Phil's interaction with the audience) to be more spontaneous in front of their home crowd. I thought he was going to be more relaxed (speaking native language), but that wasn't the case. It were the same jokes in just the same way. Some additions ('we cannot play too long because we have to get back to the home' - referring to their old age and 'a song from a time when some of you still had hair' and smt about the rain and the BBC which I couldn't quite understand). Probably I have a too idealized image watching video footage from 20+ years ago, when they were much younger, and much more energetic it seems.... It didn't bother me that much during the previous shows, but I had too high expectations for this show.
- starting at 7.45 pm made that darkness only set in at a later stage in the show, a pity (eg in Brussels they only started at about 9pm)

So I was disappointed. It even seemed to me at one point thereafter, I had lost the magic of Genesis. The chemistry was gone, it was no longer special, it had turned into a vulgar show entertainment spectacle for the uninterested masses...

I did found the magic back on the trainride with Eurostar to Brussels though, listening to my live recordings of Genesis on my MP3. It seemed pure again.  Smiley

I don't want this to be all negative, and although this has already gotten far too long, some positive thoughts to add:

- queuing it seems, is indeed a very British civilized thing. Going in and out of the stadium (Wembley and Twickenham), queuing to get into public transport afterwards, this all went very smoothly.

- public transport getting there and back afterwards was well organized. No problems there, although the underground door just shut in ours faces at Waterloo station, so walked another half an hour to get to the hotel.

And foremost:  Smiley Getting to meet some of you guys at the pub before the show made it a very nice experience indeed. A pleasure meeting you all: Steve Hammond and family, Cosmic Lawnmower and Cynthia's Mallet, Original Genesis fan! Dorsetbay, and this peculiar guy with a Flower Kings T-shirt, now who was that again, ah of course, Nov ;-)  Grin (sorry if I didn't spell the names correctly). Thanks, it was really nice!

So here are some photos. I PM you guys the links of more photos of the pub meeting.

Funky, groovy, signed sealed, delivered I'm yours!!!

Voor wie Stevie Wonder alleen maar zou associëren met liedjes als I just call to say I love you (toegegeven...), de funk zit hem vooral in nummers als Superstition, Living for the city, Sir Duke, Higher Ground, en nog zovele meer.

2009 Verviers, Spirit of 66

Stukken beter!
